D11 – Digital Payment Tools – EiP

About the module

Digital payments, made possible by the Internet, are becoming more common and, in some cases, they are taking precedence over cash and cards. There are different digital paying methods, that include the use of credit/debit cards, mobile payments, QR code payments and “superapps”.

As an artist, you become the first and most important seller of your own artworks. For this reason it is fundamental to be educated on how selling works, especially through online platforms.
As soon as you decide to start selling your art, your thoughts should go straight to the internet. The internet is one of the most convenient ways to get your art in front of a large audience, but it presents a dilemma: how will your customers send you payments in a way that is easy, secure and trustworthy for everyone?

The easiest thing you can do is rely on well-known payment platforms or websites that have proven over the years to be safe and easy to use. But before diving into the different platforms you can use, the artist/seller must decide how they want to sell their art. By that we mean that they should decide if they want to sell their products autonomously through their personal website or if they want to use third-party platforms. (You can find details of this skill in a dedicated module entitled “E-distribution of artwork)

If you decide to open your personal website and sell art pieces directly from there you should rely on verified and secure payment methods (like PayPal, World Pay, Square, ect…). This is a good choice for two reasons. Customers will feel safer buying from you because they recognise the payment methods and you will have access to sellers protection as well.

You could also choose to sell your artworks on third-party platforms, like eBay, Etsy or Art Station. These are platforms with a solid community, an established audience and trust-worthy payment systems.
